Healthcare system in Fiji

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services monitors and runs the healthcare system in Fiji. Both public and private healthcare facilities are available for the general public, and public hospitals provide primary care that is largely free for the population. Healthcare services in the mainland are easily accessible, but if you’re in the outer islands, then these facilities are limited. 

The healthcare services throughout Fijian hospitals differ from region to region. There are four main public hospitals in Fiji. The main island Viti Levu has the two biggest and oldest hospitals and a few premium privately-owned hospitals. Vanua Levu has two small public hospitals that are in Labasa and Savusavu town. 

Hospitals in Viti Levu 

As mentioned above, the two oldest and biggest hospitals, the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) and Oceania Hospitals, are located in Viti Levu. Viti Levu offers some of the most premium privately-owned hospitals that provide the best patient services.

The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) is the biggest and oldest public healthcare provider in Fiji. The hospital has been running in Fiji for the longest period of time, providing general medical services such as maternity, children’s care, ICU, outpatient, scanning and other operation services. The hospital’s emergency department is operational 24 hours. The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) is located at Waimanu Road Suva.

Lautoka Hospital is located in the western division, Lautoka. This public healthcare has been providing general medical services to the Fijians since 1974. They provide general medical services such as outpatient services, blood bank, hospital pharmacy, dental care, optometry services and maternity services. The hospital has successfully completed open heart surgeries as well. Lautoka Hospital is operational 24 hours. 

Labasa and Savusavu Hospital 

Vanua Levu has two smaller hospitals that are located in Labasa and Savusavu town. The hospital provides general medical services to the public, such as outpatient pharmacy and maternity.
